SCHOOL VISITS

I love visiting grade schools! There's nothing more fun than writing, drawing, and talking shop with a room full of young writers and illustrators. I present a highly-interactive 55-minute assembly that offers a quick look at my process, and ends with us all working together to create ideas for a new book—from scratch! It's a total blast. PLUS: we’ll take a sneak peek at my next book!

My assemblies vary to match grade-level. I’ll typically do three assemblies at a full-day school visit: a shorter session for K/1, and two longer assemblies for grades 2/3 and 4/5.

During my assemblies, I’ll create on-the-fly illustrations to go with the students’ suggestions, and leave those drawings with your school. Some schools hang these drawings in the library, some schools give them away, and I’m fairly certain that one second grade class in Ohio used them to line the hamster cage.

I also offer a variety of creative writing workshops for smaller groups. Some of the workshops include:

• Writing “voices” for your characters — and your narrator!

• Drawing a “treasure-map” to plot out a story.

• Monster mash-up (for younger writers): How to create your own unique, silly monsters.

• Villainous plans (for older writers): How to design the perfect bad-guy for your story.

Troy Cummings’ visit to our school was wonderful. His presentations were perfect for each individual grade level and very interactive. The enthusiasm for reading and writing his visit has sparked within our building has been tremendous. We can’t wait to have him back again!
